    We are working with an established System Integrator company based in Nottingham, UK. 

     

    They are recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team.

    In return for a salary up to £60.000 along with excellent employment benefits.

     

     

    Our Client are a leading provider of automation solutions within the warehousing and logistics industry, specializing in the design, integration, and installation of control systems for complex logistics operations.

    As part of ongoing expansion, they are looking for an experienced and skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join their dynamic team in Nottingham.

     

     

    They are seeking a highly accomplished engineering professional.

    The ideal candidate will possess a robust academic background, holding a BSc or MEng in Mechanical Engineering, supplemented by an MSc in a specialised area of Mechanical Engineering related to Engineering/ Machine Design.

    This role demands a seasoned professional with experience in mechanical design principles, analytical methodologies, advanced engineering practices and mathematical modelling of engineering systems.

    Experience as a Designer within an industrial automation or product development setting is a prerequisite for this role, and experience in the design and engineering of material handling equipment would be very advantageous.

     

     

     

    Key Responsibilities include:

     

    • Design and Development: Spearhead the design process for cutting-edge electromechanical systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices. Utilise advanced CAD (SolidWorks, 2D CAD) and CAE tools to produce detailed and manufacturing drawings, engineering analyses, assembly instructions, and specifications.
    • Advanced Analysis: Conduct thorough analyses using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Structural Analysis, and Fatigue Analysis theory to validate designs. Apply engineering mathematics, numerical methods, and mathematical modelling to solve fundamental problems in statics, dynamics, vibration, and mechanism kinematics during design and product development / optimisation.
    • System Integration: Oversee the design and integration of industrial automation systems, including the selection and sizing of gear-motors, actuators, and other mechanical elements. Ensure seamless interaction between mechanical components and electrical systems, adhering to fundamental electrical machine principles.
    • Innovation and R&D: Lead research and development initiatives to create novel designs, internal testing equipment and optimise existing products. Understanding and research experience on design intellectual property legislation, patents and management of IP will be beneficial.
    • Risk Management and Compliance: Conduct DFMEA and risk assessments to identify potential design flaws and safety concerns. Ensure compliance with the Machinery Directive and relevant design standards, implementing safety protocols throughout the design process.
    • Manufacturing and Assembly: Excellent understanding and appropriate use of tolerances and GD&T principles. Champion Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) practices. Collaborate with manufacturing teams in the specification and selection of processes involving sheet metal fabrication, machining, plastic injection moulding, heat treatments, and coatings, ensuring manufacturability and cost-effectiveness.
    • Diagnostics and Testing: Lead machine diagnostics and design of experiments to validate designs against performance metrics. Utilise sensors and measurement techniques to gather data for ongoing improvement and troubleshooting.
    • Documentation and Standards: Drive initiatives in the development and maintenance of comprehensive CAD libraries and documentation standards. Ensure all engineering documentation meets corporate and industry standards for quality and accuracy.
    • Cost Optimisation & Value Engineering: Lead cost-engineering activities and design optimisation taking into consideration value and cost of design, materials, processes, supply chains. To spearhead activities of research and testing on alternative options against design criteria and advise on business / design team strategies accordingly.

     

     

     

    Requirements:

     

    • Education: BSc or MEng in Mechanical Engineering or similar and MSc in a mechanical engineering field (preferably related to Engineering Design).
    • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in Mechanical Design engineering with a proven track record of leading complex projects from conception to production.
    • Technical Skills: Proficient in FEA, 3D CAD (ideally SolidWorks) and 2D CAD, fundamental experience in a programming language (i.e. MATLAB). Strong knowledge of mechanical components, manufacturing processes, engineering principles and engineering calculations.
    • Problem-Solving: Exceptional analytical skills with a strategic mindset and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges, developing mathematical models and designing experiments.
    • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex technical information to diverse stakeholders. Strong commercial awareness and business acumen are skills which will benefit the role.
